Start Small, But Think Big!

Changes are hard, there’s no doubt about it. Instead of freezing in place, overwhelmed by the number of things you think you need to start doing, why not just pick a few things, and tackle them on a weekly basis?
Health and wellness goals are pretty common at this time of year, but so often, people either fizzle out early, or fail to start altogether because they’re overwhelmed by it all.
If you’re frozen in your tracks, afraid to even start, here are a few easy things you can start doing today!
1. Eat breakfast. I wrote a post about breakfast for Green Moms Collective that is chock full of easy, useful breakfast ideas. Check it out. Breakfast doesn’t have to be a shake, but it also doesn’t have to be complicated. But if you want to feel your best all day, you’ve got to start your day off right.
2. Get more sleep. I just can’t emphasize this enough – you need sleep. A lot happens inside your body while you’re sleeping. Sleep help regulates your hunger signals during the day, so if you’re sleep deprived, you’ll probably want to eat more, and not always the good stuff. Quality of sleep also affects your mood (hello better mental health!), and can help balance emotional eating. The bottom line is that you need sleep in order to function properly.
3. Stop drinking so much alcohol. Like to unwind with a glass of something at the end of the day? A small “reward” for whatever it was that stressed you out? There’s no harm in a small glass ocassionally, but if it’s become a nightly habit you may want to reconsider and reach for something else. Alcohol does not help you relax and sleep better, in fact, it affects your ability to reach your deepest sleep state and makes you more restless. Also, besides giving you nutritionally void extra calories, alcohol also gives you a hit of sugar which won’t help your sleep or your waistline.
Start with smaller, more manageable changes, and work up from there! Even if you feel like you started the year strong and are losing steam now, don’t give up! Slow down, revisit your habits, and start making smaller changes to get back on track.
